Wisteria Trellis

Our Wisteria is in its second year of growth & ready for its first prune. It's against a wall of our stone built cottage & now we need to consider installing the best way of supporting it as it grows. There's numerous options to choose from, but being stone, it's not exactly a flat surface. What would be best system for these conditions? Thanks in advance...

Hi @ian.ingham - possibly better to use wires and vine eyes. You can get heavy duty ones which can be hammered into the wall. There are also tensioners available which can be used for the heftier wire too.  :)

I'd go with wires too but do try and attach the wisteria stems with twine rather than winding them round it.   We have inherited two mature wisterias here and their main stems and trunks are as woody and sturdy as trees and are now free standing so you'd never get the wires out once the stems start to harden.

If you can't drill into your stone walls, try erecting a couple of posts in front and drilling holes thru those to thread wires and tension them.

Conventional wooden trellis would be far too flimsy and wire mesh would be a nightmare to untangle.

  • Thanks both Fairygirl & Obelixx for your advice, do you feel 3mm wire is adequate or should I go for 4mm?

I'll leave that one to @Obelixx as I don't grow it, but I'd think you're better with heavier rather than lighter.
They become very hefty plants  :)
