Hi, in the first picture, is this a spent flower? in the second picture, is that a new bud? Thanks

    Yes, you're correct.
  • Thank you. I am new to gardening so I appreciate the help. also, when dead heading, do I cut down to the next off shoot and not just cut the flower head off?

That tends to look better - look out for tiny flower buds lurking under the first or second leaves down the stem and cut above them, if they exist.  Definitely worth deadheading cosmos, which will then continue flowering until the frosts.   :)
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • Thank you very much. I have a feeling I'll be on here quite a bit. We have just moved house and the garden has a wide range of flowers and plants..

That looks like cosmos lemonade,  I'm growing some this year too and have been collecting seed heads to sow next year

If you leave a few deadhead until they dry the seed will be ready to collect store in a paper bag or envelope 👍

You've already got three answers right @Astongarden, so you're doing ok  ;)

If you need help with IDs of plants, take some photos - distance and close up, and start a thread with a suitable title. If you keep it to around 3 or 4 different ones on a single thread, that makes it easier.  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
