I have had three crataegus persimilis Prunifolia. Nice blossom and berries, sometimes good autumn colour but do be aware that this tree has the most vicious long thorns I have ever seen! Quite dangerous really, and the trees can form a very dense canopy.
Like a thicket atop a trunk. It was an awful job to trim any wayward branches or weed underneath.

I think id prefer something that's not too thorny as my nephews are over often and id be afraid they would get hurt. Mind you they would soon learn. I'll go to the garden center this weekend to see what's in stock, especially the one mentioned by Dove (I'll have to write down the name). Not to buy as im not ready yet, but just to think about it.

While im here do any of you have dogs? I have a little houdini, who is very persistent.
I know fencing is an option but i would prefer something that would allow the hedgehog to still be able to visit. Any ideas?

Thank you so much for your advice, im really getting excited now.

Unless your Houdini is particularly small it should be possible to make a Hedgehog Highway under a fence … details here https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/help-hedgehogs/link-your-garden/. 🦔
