We have a 40 + year old climbing hydrangea that covers the front of our house but it very much benefits from being in a north east facing aspect. I think like the others have mentioned that yours has simple suffered from a lack of moisture when it needed it. I've seen lots of plants suffering this year with a combination of strong winds and little rainfall. Our next door neighbour had a mature ten foot high olive, lose every single leaf but it came back over a couple of months. I think your hydrangea should be the same with a little tlc and perhaps a nice mulch in the autumn.
