Cutting a water butt in half

Water butt has several leaks, so I want to cut it in half and wonder what I should use.  The butt is plastic in construction.  Any suggestions

Jig saw or general wood saw.

I think I used a hacksaw (full size not the little one) but I think any old saw would do it.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • An old general wood saw be best. I say old as it will be hopeless at cutting timber after you've cut plastic with it. Angle grinder with metal cutting blade 👍

seakale Lengthways or across?  And what will the two halves be used for?  All the above advice is excellent but you'll either have two troughs or, if you don't cut it across, just cut the base off and use as a forcer for rhubarb or deep spuds in season.  My own leaky butt now holds all my kitchen compost in readiness for 2022's runner bean pit.

I aim to create a frog house with the base.  I will have to put in a heavy duty plastic liner.  The leak is by the tap end, and there may well be other leaks in waiting as it’s an old cast off butt and not a make I usually purchase.

Our son wants to dig the hole, saves going to the gym! And I hope the frogs who already live in the garden may eventually breed there.  But it may be too small I don’t know

the top will get used, possibly for strawberries which I haven’t grown for decades.

    thanks for all the suggestions

Jigsaw every time for me. You'd still have to make a hole of some kind to get an ordinary saw in, which is quite awkward.
Good luck with your project @seakale :)
