From the photo- it was pretty classic sawfly caterpillar damage. That's all.  :/
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

One of the things I love about this forum is the wealth of different available advice. We have professional growers, highly experienced amateurs and total beginners.
One thing that is usually very noticeable, is that the more people know, the more readily posters, humbly admit their limitations and readily admit their mistakes.
Unfortunately @bede you seem to be the exception, my conclusion being, perhaps you are no expert at all.
Perhaps as you yourself mention, you would be better looking for another forum, where your belligerence may be more welcome.
How can you lie there and think of England

    Looking for another forum?

    Why not build your own?

    It can’t be that difficult.

It could be by invitation only thereby keeping out irritating time wasters.
  • Collected all we could find and taken as far away as possible to under our boundary hawthorne hedge, easy pickings for our feathered friends hopefully....  Thanks to all once again for your help!

Fingers crossed @Tina Duffill. You'll just need to be vigilant, but sometimes these things are fleeting, and next year your ferns will probably be fine.  :)
    Gardening is often rather fickle!
