Indeed @richjamesturner. While we can easily have upwards of 50 to 60 frosts, even in a mild winter, it's wet cold that does more damage. It's why Cordylines often just don't thrive here - especially in clay soil, which is what most gardens have. Exposed sites aren't great either, so a combination of those is a bit disastrous.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
