Carrots grown in freshly manured soil will be far more likely to grow "legs" like yours have done.
The RHS says you can sow carrots from spring to autumn so I would suggest you try another sowing but in a space that hasn't been recently manured. Once sown and growing they need good drainage and fine soil with no stones as they will also cause forking.

Ive just been out to pick some more carrots. Interestingly, the ones Im growing in containers (a couple of old buckets) have yielded bigger carrots than in my veg beds. Same soil, same depth, same date of sowing, same spacing. Just an observation.
