What a ridiculous discussion! Various definitions of ecology:

the relationships between the air, land , water, animals, plants, etc., usually of a particular area, or the scientific study of this

is the study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment  Ecology considers organisms at the individual,  population, community, ecosystems, and biosphere level.

The branch of biology that deals with the relations of one another and their surroundings.

How can you take ecology too far!?
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

As you say this isn't the most intelligent discussion starter but the title does specify 'A gardeners role in ecology'. Ecology in the garden has to be balanced with the requirements of every day life for most people and you have to accept that gardens might be short lived in their current form as well as being subject to, or causing, conflict with neighbours.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
