  • Squish one and see.  Fertiliser pellets will be in the compost and will usually pop.  Should be easy enough to distinguish between them and caterpillar faeces.

    Hello,

Our box hedge has been devastated this year by caterpillars. Fortunately we’ve noticed Sparrows are eating them! Which is great news.
We usually have blue tits in the garden but when my dad visited he spotted some coal tits which I did read consume them. A bit late to the party now that my box hedge are like twigs but great they are finding them more palatable!

We went to our local topiary centre who (also at their wits end with it!) said that March, June and September are the caterpillar seasons. Best treatment really is Xentari although you can buy online in the UK it isn’t licensed for purchase in garden centres etc until they think next spring. Once you’ve treated, cut a good inch off of the top of the hedge and use grow formula. They have the moth traps hanging before the next season! 🤪
We’ve bought TopBuxus grow, from Amazon and praying this will do the trick. If not, I’m ripping it out and building brick walls 😩😩
