Squirrel also plants them for you. Doesn't always think to dig them up later so lots of seedlings. Quite a few of mine have dropped already but not ripe enough yet. Both I and the Squirrel usually get a good enough haul to satisfy both of us.
I must be lucky then - I still have a bowl full of ripe nuts from last year. As well as just munching or having with cereal , I also use them in home made chocs. Wrapped in marzipan and coated in choc they are a treat. Sorry about that B3 and Pete

I had one for about 10 years and dug it up eventually.
