Cracking like that usually means irregular watering is the problem. Some apples are more prone than others. Give the affected tree a good watering at least once a week in dry spells.
  • Yep, we have had very dry weather here so have watered well once a week, these apples are mostly near the bottom to halfway up the tree and are smaller than the rest of the fruit. Same every year.
  • I do wonder how commercial apple growers get over this problem.
We have a small orchard and when the trees were young yes they were watered for the first year and into the second year.
But a 5 year old tree? Has it been in the ground for 5 years? Or is it still a very young tree?  Can we still think that we have to water fruit trees for so much longer?
Don't now what the answer is.

That variety is a little prone to canker, so follow the branches back from affected fruit to see if you can see any signs.  Canker would result in areas beyond the damage receiving less sap, and so producing symptoms like this, which indicate some kind of stress (usually water-related), as already mentioned.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Ok, thanks for the help. Will check it out.
