Anyone know what this is?

This is our first summer in our new home and as a new build the garden needs work. However we're also newbies to actually having a garden and learning as we go. We're about to cut our grass short, rake it, and put down a moss /weed killer and then in a few weeks out down new grass seed. However in the last couple of weeks, this thing has popped up and I was just wondering if the weed and moss killer will deal with it or if we need something more aggressive? Thanks!

Now is not the time to cut grass very short as extra length helps it feed its roots better and make the plant stronger to combat both heat and weeds.

lawn weed and feed products are best applied in spring or autumn when the grass is moist and not stressed by heat or drought.

Regular mowing between now and mid September with the blades set high and not in scalp mode will keep the grass growing well.   If and when you do apply a weed and feed mixture make sure you read the instructions carefully about when to apply after cutting and do not exceed the dose or you will turn your grass black.

In the meantime, you could use a trowel or hand fork to take out that weed before it spreads any further.  If you have moss you need to address drainage.  If you don't have moss it's a waste of time and money applying moss killer.

Thank you for the advice @Obelixx. We'll hold off on the weeding /resending till the end of the month then.

That's really good of you @Silver surfer. Good to know that the regular weeder will do what we need!  :)

Mis September would be better unless you get a late burst of summer heat, in which case wait a bit longer.

I get all sorts in my lawn. celandines, coltsfoot, plantain, achillea,  lots of clover, currently some  chicory. (not a lot of grass)The bees love it.  The neighbours cat like chasing the butterflies around.  Give the wildlife a chance.

@fidgetbones we have a lot of clover and buttercups and lots of wild flowers and weeds in a huge slope that's ungardenable (we're thinking of some raised decking to make it usable) but our intention with the back is to seed it with wildflower and meadow grasses and just do the front with regular grass.
If the back looks good next year however the front might find itself a wildflower meadow too lol. We love encouraging the bees and butterflies and the cats enjoy a good prowl in the grass 🦋😊
