Replanting garlic

I had a couple of plants grow this year from bulbs which hadn't split the previous year. I don't have anywhere cool enough to store them until the Autumn so would it be OK to pot up the cloves now with the intention of planting out later?

  • Our garlic did really bad this year and so have left them in the ground. They are already sprouting so maybe we will get a better return.
    Always worth a gamble.
  • I can't believe I am writing about garlic this year. However, I find it difficult for the garlic plant to grow, and it is true. I haven't seen any nurseries or grocers even having a garlic plant.

Are you looking for garlic to plant now? Most UK garlic is planted in the autumn. There are some varieties that can be planted in the spring. More information here https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/how-to-grow-garlic/

An update: I forgot about the garlic bulbs again and only split them and potted them up about 6 weeks ago when I saw they were beginning to sprout. I now have a couple of dozen healthy plants growing in pots in the greenhouse which I shall plant out in the veg patch in another month or so. I also noticed a couple of stray plants in the veg plot, probably small original bulbs which didn't do much the first time out.

Quick question. I purchased 3 packs of garlic bulbs, I split them up as I potted them back in November, they shot up in the polytunnel, I had only used 2 of the 3 packs. Unfortunately with the storms my polytunnel got shaken so badly that all my growing things were thrown to the ground, it was 2 or 3 days before I went into the garden to check things, all the lovely garlic were strewn across the floor, I picked the mess up, and decided to plant what I could straight into the ground, do you think they will survive? two days later the polytunnel got ripped wide open and everything was soaked. I purchased a new cover, and on the first still and bright day, I replaced the old one. During the clean-up I discovered the other pack of garlic, they were looking a bit decayed and going rotten, however there were green shoots coming out, so I separated them up and planted them, do you think those will survive too?

Most plants are pretty resilient… I think it’s worth crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. 🤞
    I would.
