Acer problem

Hello,

I bought my mum an acer last year which had a nice weeping shape to it. This season it’s had a lot of new growth, however instead of growing bigger (upwards) and weeping, the one weeping side has thrown out a lot of new shoots growing outwards and downwards (see pictures).

Does anyone know how to rectify this? Ideally we would like the tree to get bigger, but grow upwards then weep, rather than outwards whilst weeping.

Thanks
GF!

A lot of Acers have put on large amounts of extension growth this year. You can trim back some of the excess now, back to 2 or 3 pairs of leaves if you need to.  If long growth is going up too high you can either wire the branches and bend them down or tie a small weight or stone, agin to bend it down.  If you wire branches check the wire regularly as it's easy to mark the bark if you leave it on too long/ tight.  Basically you are creating a garden bonsai.  Don't try to do too much too fast.
