Hydrangea's not flowered this year

Hi Everyone

There are 3 hydrangea's in my garden and for some reason none of them have flowered this year.  We've done no pruning either.

Do I need to give them a feed or see what happens next year.

Any help will be great.

Possibly frost damage when new growth was developing, or they've been dehydrated at the time they need to form new buds.

I doubt mine will make buds, let alone flower,  before the frosts start in October. All new growth was hammered. :)
One of the oak leaf ones is fine, but it's against the house wall. The other was moved, so I wouldn't expect it to flower this year.

Several of mine were decimated by frost and are only just recovering, they won’t flower this year

Out of my 5 hydrangeas of various types (old and new) only one failed to flower and that was a young plant that had frost bite when delivered. Its looking very healthy now so hope to see it blue flowers next year.

Need more info from @Gardenqueen though - location and climate plays a big part in the outcome, as with so many problems with any plant  :)

  • Ours are just coming into flower this week. Were hit badly with frosts but came back and now flowering but not as good as they should be.

Blame the winter.  Not just the frosts, but the timing when sap is rising.
In Surrey, on dry acid soil I really can't grow hydrangeas.  Late frosts, dry late summers (not this year), sun dips under the tree shade.

PS they grow like weeds from cutings.  I can grow them in pots, over-winter in a cold greenhouse, and place 2-3 year plants into bare spots in the borders.

Yes - frosts when new growth is appearing. Already mentioned, but we need @Gardenqueen to offer more info  :)

    Hydrangeas continued.
'Libelle' close to the house, facing SE,is flowering better than ever. Looks whiter in its blue manifestation.  Probably at bit tender for Surrey.

  • My two mop head hydrangea have failed to flower but the climber has flowered as normal.  We didn't seem to have much frost this spring.  There are plenty of leaves on the shrubs but no sign of a flower developing.  I did prune them back in the spring as I always do, should I leave more old growth this time when I prune?
