tomato plants not looking too healthy

I only have two plants.  They are looking a bit droopy.  I have watered and fed as advised.  What am I doing wrong

Need a photo, and more info. How are they being grown - indoors or outdoors?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

  • I have them indoors inside patio doors. I have grown tomatoes before in this spot.
  • so any answers for my poor tomato plants?  Definitely appear to be on last legs

    Do they never go outside?
What are they growing in - they don't seem to have much foliage?
They shouldn't need fed until they have fruit set.

They don't seem to have enough foliage to feed the fruit - if the flowers form.
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • Basically they are not outside very often.  Maybe the pot that they are in is not large enough? You are both right in that there is not enough foliage.  What should I do about this? Larger pot?  I guess I should'nt have been feeding them.  Did'nt   realise no feeding

It's difficult to judge the pot size against the plant, but it's perfectly possible to grow toms in quite small pots. I've done it frequently. Over feeding isn't a good idea though, and simply isn't necessary of they're growing in a decent compost.  :)
It should look much better than that though, if it was potted on from seedling stage as it outgrew each pot it was in. I wonder if it hasn't had enough light and warmth early on. Light is particularly important in the early stages to get healthy growth, and that looks very leggy.
They need some airflow for health - so greenhouse ones would have doors or vents opened on good days, and anything potted and inside a house should be outside for a little while at least on warmer days. That also aids pollination.  :)

I'm not sure you can do much at this stage - it's quite late in the season. There looks like you have some flowers though, so as long as they're pollinated, you should get some fruit.

  • Thank you so much for all that information.  I guess Not enough light and warmth. Poor plants. They are definitely very leggy. I will keep trying with them, outside and watering and see what happens.  I did actually manage to have some lovely tomatoes last year but, of course, I can't actually remember how I did it.
Once again thank you and the other person for your help.  If I succeed with anything, I will definitely let you know.

Fingers crossed you'll get something. If you look on the forum around March/April next year, you'll see plenty of info on growing toms, as that's when most people start sowing seed.  :)

Consistent watering is always the best method, and helps prevent problems later on, but don't overwater - wait until the plant is slightly on the dry side.  :)
