Cordylin Australis

I have what i think is a Cordyline Australis  for the last 6 years and it is now 5 foot tall and has been growing quite happily in a large container , until last winter which was exceptionally hard here . The main leaves died back , and most could be pulled off easily - however there is new growth coming from the top of the plant ( it also flowered for the first time that previous spring )so i was quiet happy to leave it - however what looks like new leaves have started growing out from the trunk , from about one foot from the ground , all the way up . Should i leave these or cut them off , as I'm worried it will look more like a bush than a tree if i leave these to grow - particularly as there is a cluster of new leaves  at the top of the tree .

  • Hello. Not sure really but I would allow the lower leaves to grow and then take out the weaker ones just in case your top growth dies back again.

  • It isn't unusual for them to sucker after a hard winter.
You may well find that it will have several growing points and it isn't particularly unusual. If you think the main trunk may suffer this coming winter, then at least you will have more growth to compensate.  Not always easy to persuade them to remain a single stem plant ;)
May be a good idea if you can post a photo which would at least confirm your ID if you are unsure.
