Just check that anyone you choose is hardy for your area. The only borderline one so far is the Penstemon as @Busy-Lizzie says. Most aren't very hardy here where I am, for example. The species tulips are excellent, as suggested, as they return, and often multiply. Another good plant for later in summer, into autumn is Sedum spectabile, although it has a new name now Hylotelephium [which is a bit of a mouthful] You'll still find it under Sedum spectabile though.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
