Moving plants

KirstyWYKirstyWY Posts: 35
I've done the usual amateur thing of not thinking how large plants can get when I was planting my garden nearly from scratch three years ago. So now I need to move certain plants as they are being crowded by others.

One of them is a star magnolia that's no longer getting enough light. It's only about two feet tall and it doesn't look happy in its spot.

Is there a good time to move plants, or is it on a case-by-case basis?

It's best done while the plant is dormant. Plants that are fussy about winter wet or are not fully hardy are best moved as they are coming out of dormancy in early spring.

For something like a Magnolia, or any shrub/tree really, it's best to do it when they're dormant. Autumn/winter.  :)
I often move things when I need, or want, to, but if you're unsure, it's better to wait. It's easier to re establish shrubs when temps are cooler and there's adequate rainfall to save them becoming dehydrated.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
