Marlorena... you've not misunderstood me. That's what I was suggesting... budding on (if that's the only viable method that keeps the host plant intact) onto our Kiftsgate, just like young Fred in the video is demonstrating. He does claim success after all, but is probably grafting onto something less... challenging. I suppose I could, as an alternative, sacrifice the top growth of one or two of the several stems at ground level... and there is even, I notice, another new stem this year... and graft using a different method if the chances of success might be better. I said we were enthusiastic, but didn't claim to be talented or knowledgeable.
Edhelka... yes just like young Fred, although the long-term is an unknown. But I think if this beast of a Kiftgate lost a limb or two it would hardly notice.
JennyJ... you are probably right although, any grafts I did would be treated to as much TLC as the experiment required.
In summary,.... is it that it sounds like something that might be technically feasible, but only small chance of success and the hoped-for benefits unlikely to materialise? Bang goes my vision of having a sweet smelling rose flowering all summer with masses of colourful flowers thriving on the vigour stolen from the Kiftsgate. But.....
