Tomato Varieties

  • All my tomatoes are doing well, (crosses fingers) with the exception of Principe Borghese.
Although grown in identical conditions as the other 5 varieties, they are still very small, though healthy.
I hope they will 'catch up'. They are certainly slow!

I have found Tigerella slow and a bit weedy looking, it has fruit but not sure if it could survive an attack of cold/heat/blight.

I have grown the tomato Roma which came free with gardeners world magazine my wife sowed 30 seeds which all germinated, the ones in the greenhouse don't look has good as the ones outside, I can't understand it because I haven't looked after them like I have in the greenhouse, they just don't seem to want to grow as bush like the ones outside. I will have to see if anybody else has had the same problem.

Mine are outside in the veg patch ... they're growing really well.  My understanding is that they're a bush type producing a large crop of 'paste type' tomatoes which tend to ripen around the same time so great for bottling, freezing, making and freezing sauces etc.

That's right @Dovefromabove they do mostly ripen together. My Roma are from three year old seed bought from GC @Plashing , and are very good at germinating. They are in the greenhouse and are now 75×75cm with half grown fruits already. Some of these early ones will ripen, but most will wait till August, at which time its all hands on deck to process them for the freezer.
  • My tomatoes have had a very poor start this year so the plants are way behind. I have given up on Gardeners Delght after a few years of poor performance.
I am trying Big Mama, Cocktail Crush and Mountain Magic, no idea how they will do.

I have gardeners delight & cherrola both about 7' high now bit tips are nipped out now, my gardeners delight has 2 stalks as i work away from home for 3 weeks and I forgot to say to my wife to pinch out the side shoots so just left the GD as it was when i got home, maybe thats why it's slightly behind the other plant?.
Had a few toms from the cherrola already, the GD bottom truss are just starting to turn colour (excuse the mess in the greenhouse lol)

Had consuelo last year which turned out ok

I have 5 varieties this year, all were sown the first week of March inside and now about half are in a cold greenhouse and half outside against a south facing wall.  So far only Sweet Aperitif has ripe fruit, on both greenhouse and outside plants. Others all coming along nicely but SA gets the prize for the first.

Review of my varieties this year.  Firstly, the reason I posted this thread was because I wanted a replacement for the old 'Gardeners Delight'. So far nothing I've grown is that good but this is how I assess what I've grown.

Brandywine Red: a big juicy variety with the best taste of this years bunch.  Mostly disease free, apart form some blossom end rot on some of the earliest ones, and I would say a medium cropper.  It's determinate as far as I can tell and I think I've had the last of the big ones.

Big Rainbow: another big one with a good flavour but seems to need longer time to come into production.  Not a great cropper and has not done well outside but good in the greenhouse.  No sign of any diseases and determinate so I don't think there will be many more to pick so quite a short season.

Rosella: mixed results with this one, some plants have done better than others.  Good flavour but on the small size, even for a cherry tomato. I don't think I'll grow it again.

Sweet Aperitif:  Another cherry tomato which has cropped well both in the greenhouse and outside but they are quite small.  Very good flavour and the variety with the first ripe fruits and will go on awhile yet I think. I'll grow it again next year.

Stupice: This is a good all rounder I think.  Medium sized fruits which have done better in the greenhouse.  Good but not exceptional flavour.  It's the first year I've grown it and will grow again next year. Lots more to come I think.

So how have yours done? I hope people will post how their varieties have performed this year. Happy tomato growing!

  • All mine are out doors and have preformed very well.

I planted 2 Gardeners Delight, 1 from new seed and 1 from seed I saved from a tomato last year. It was my first time trying to save seed hence doing 1 of each to see how I did. Both preformed well and no different from each other.

I tried Shady Lady for the first time and it cropped better than the Gardeners Delight and for me, they tasted better. It ripened before the Gardeners Delight too.

After reading about Maskotka on here I gave it a go in baskets. I normally grow tumbling Tom in baskets/pots with mixed results hence wanting something new. I was very impressed with Maskotka. Huge crops of fruits that taste great, I am constantly popping one or two in my mouth every time I pass them. My new favorite.
