Berberis root - ways to kill rather than dig out?

Hi, having now identified a Berberis I have cut it back and discovered a rather large root (new garden from December so I had no idea we had this until recently).  It looks far too hefty (approx 6" across and rock solid) for us to remove unfortunately so I am wondering if there is some way it can be killed off?  Many thanks.

Covered mine with a bucket. It never sprouted again.

Stump/brushwood killer would also work. Depends on what you'd find easiest.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
