Name of Weed and Flower

karenktekarenkte Posts: 47
Please can someone advise / help to identify the following.

1. Pic 1 and 4 look like a flower but I think they are a weed.  When I touched the flower head I felt it gave me a sharp sting.

2. Pic 2 and 5 is definately a weed and it seems to come up all over.  What is this.  No flower just leaves everywhere.

If 1 and 2 are weeds would roundup spot gel weedkiller work on them?

3. Pic 3 is a flower.  What is this?

Is there a good book with great colour / large pictures that anyone could recommend to identify weeds.  I worry I'm pulling out a plant when I'm weeding.

Thank you

1 and 4 White deadnettle … easiest way to get rid of them is, on a damp day,  use a hand fork to loosen the roots then pull them up. They don’t sting but might give a slight prickle.

2 and 5 are Ground elder.  A PITA and an ongoing struggle for many because the roots are brittle.

3 is a Japanese anemone. Pretty and useful in dryish shade, but inclined to make itself too much at home. Keep it under control. 😉

I love the dead nettles, especially the white one  :)
The pink Jap. anemone can be a bit invasive in some situations, so you might need to keep an eye on it.
Not sure if there's a good book on weeds, although someone else might be able to recommend one, but there are certainly plenty of good websites for IDing all sorts of native plants [ or weeds ;) ] and  wildlife etc, which might be a starting point for you. Just have a Google and see what you can find  :)

  • To me picture 1 looks like one of the dead nettle plants. There are types that self sow in my own garden but I think the flower is nice so I don't count them as weeds. The type I get stays fairly small so it does not interfere with the other garden plants I have growing so I just let it do its own thing. If a plant is in the wrong place then it is a weed so if you don't like any of the plants in your garden then remove them and plant something in their place that you do like.
Picture 2 looks like ground elder that is a very difficult to control plant as it has a mass of underground stems that are difficult to remove.
Picture 3 looks like a wood anemone.

Sorry I can't offer any advice on using toxic chemicals in the garden as I prefer to keep these out of my garden and just chop down and dig up plants I don't want growing there.

Here is a link to a weed identification guide with pictures. I don't know of a good book with pictures for this.

    Happy gardening!
  • Wow that's a great weed identifier thanks!

Woodland anemones don't flower at this time of year, and assuming the photos are recent, it's a Jap. anemone  in the OP/s post.  :)
They aren't invasive round here either, but I expect they aren't all the same, and if they were in with something equally strong growing, they'd be kept in check to some extent.

Dead nettles are great IMO. Bees love them AND I planted one under my hedge as a test and it’s loving life! I did also find about 20 seedlings in one of my potted grasses but they are easily removed.
