Hardy palm Trachycarpus something or other, is it dead?

I just tipped my palm out on the compost bin, as I was certain it was dead, there is no greenery at all, but the roots are huge! Should I put it back in a pot? It can go in the ground, but am I wasting my time?
If you think it will survive, what sort of conditions should I give it to not repeat my mistakes?

  • If that is all there is left of it and there are no signs of any growth at all on the stem, I'd say it is an ex palm.
You could always just turn it up the right way and leave it on your compost heap  and keep an eye out for anything remotely resembling a shoot-  as the weather is supposed to warm up soon, you never know :)
