Problem Solving

I have a large metal trough:  should I insulate it, and with what, and what is best material  to lay on base to reduce amount of soil to be used.

  • You have to be more specific, how big is it, where are you based and what are the average temperatures like? What do you want to grow in it? A photo would also help.

Hi George,  I have 2 zinc animal water troughs  120x44x40cm.  I live in Cambridgeshire.  Troughs will be east facing against wall.   I thought that the metal might get very hot in the sun and distress the plants.  Not sure what to plant but probably grasses, bulbs and perennials.  Thanks.

Would lining it with polystyrene foam insulate the troughs against heat?
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Ah that helps. I'd probably fill them completely with a mix of top soil and multipurpose compost, can't imagine they'd get too hot if well filled and well watered. Only if you put any plants that require a cool root run would be stressed by being put in there. Most greases or bamboo would cope with any extra heat if they are kept watered. Just make sure they drain well with a good amount of holes and maybe raised off the floor if it's solid.

You could always plant some topiary for evergreen interest with some ground cover for the summer months and bulbs for the spring.

Other forum members have similar large pot set ups...hopefully they'll respond with their experience.
