Does anyone know what this is?  It's really prickly and the flowers are just going over but I managed to find a couple to photograph.  It's about 5ft high and wide.  I might need to help someone reduce its size and we don't know if we can because we don't know what it is! Any help much appreciated.  Many thanks.

It's most likely Grevillea Juniperina or Rosmarinifolia. A frost hardy shrub. Yes, you can prune them back now. Avoid pruning in late autumn as any new growth may be damaged.

Thanks again Borderline, it's blocking her door so we'll tackle it tomorrow.  As it's huge do you think hedgetrimmers will be ok?  Doing it with secateurs carefully will be a painful and time consuming job I think.

I have never used hedge trimmers for anything, but I am sure it is fine. A pair of garden shears should also do the job too. Definitely not a job with secateurs, the needles are very sharp and very time consuming.
