Orchid help and random plant ID

Hello!

I have a beast of an orchid that my friend bought me, I’ve had it around three months and it is growing like crazy. I’ve repotted it today as it’s completely climbing out of it’s original pot (see pic for side by side comparison!) I realise I need to get it some proper orchid compost (it’s on the way) but needed to do something for now as it started to look sorry for itself!

I was wondering, is it too late to try and straighten the new stems. The OG stems are at the back and it’s sprouted three more over the last three months?

Also, rather than me spamming the forum with another question, does anyone know what plant this is?

  • Also, the orchid actually lives inside, it was easier to make a mess repotting it in the garden 🙂

The second photo could be the common Knapweed, Centaura Nigra.

Yes I’ll go with the Knapweed … great for insects.

I think @Nanny Beach grows lots of orchids. Hopefully she’ll see this thread …

Seen by nanny beach, indeed she does
It's a dendrobium.you can remove the extra stems and pot them up,get some more plants for free. In the summer months, any orchids that aren't in flower are in hanging baskets still in their pots, hanging under trees in the shade, like they would be in the rain forest. If it rain great, otherwise they are easy to spray with rain water. When you get your orchid compost,if you decide to separate, keep them out of the sun,let them recover
I rarely pot mine to bigger pots, just divide,( not telling how many I have)

Thank you! My mum thinks it’s really nice 😂 she wanted to know what it was! I thought it was a weed

Oh that’s so interesting! I didn’t think about separating. How would I go about this as I don’t want to damage the plant in the process?

    Thanks so much!

When you remove it from the pot  check each piece has some white roots. Hubby just carefully pulls the extra shoots off. Pop it straight into some water, before potting on.

I have an identical orchid, yes it's a dendrobium. I've found that it only flowers on the new canes. except this year (third year I have had it) when it decided to make little keikis but for flowers only no leaves, on the old canes very strange.
