Fungi suddenly appeared , what should I do ?

I filled this area in below my trees about 14 months with weed suppressing fabric and the stones on top. I had been really pleased that there had been no sign of even a single weed protruding but then straight out of the blue this lot of fungi appeared. I want to ultimately kill them off then remove the stones in that area and lay a new section of fabric as I’m imagining what’s there will be destroyed now and it could be the start of many weeds starting to come through.

My question is how do I go about killing the fungi permanently, is there a chemical I can use or just simply pull them out ?

They live under the soil everywhere.
What appears above ground is just the fruit, and only then if the conditions are right.
If it offends you then pick them off, they'll disappear of their own accord in a few days anyway.

I wouldn’t say they offend me I’m just more bothered now that the suppressant fabric has been breached and it could be the start of many weeds coming through. I’ll do as you say and let them die naturally then remove the stones and do a patch up of the suppressant fabric.
  • Worth thinking what that landscaping fabric does for the life and structure of your soil long-term. I can't imagine that area would have been that full of weeds had it just been mulched. It's one of those landscaping clichés and not sure it's actually required most of the time is used.

No, weeds wont get through if it's decent weed fabric.
Fungi are not plants and their hyphae (their equivalent of plant roots) are microscopic so can penetrate just about anything
It'll be gone on a day or two.
It may return, it may not

The suppressant fabric probably hasn't been breached, the fungi spores have most likely been blown in by the wind and the 'fruit' as Pete says is just living on the surface.

You do have to realize that nature isn't nice and tidy and that you will get weeds occasionally that are wind spread. You just have to learn to live with it and weed the area every now and then to keep it tidy. The weed suppressant will hopefully stop any deep rooted weeds from popping up through but even that will deteriorate eventually and will have to be replaced. That's life!

You do have a very attractive formal garden.

Thanks for the replies, very interesting. I did very coincidentally watch a documentary on Netflix about a week ago on the importance of fungi to our eco system so do have a better knowledge on them now than previously and hence didn’t want to just kill them as I realise their importance to the below ground we don’t see.

Before I covered the area in fabric it was a mess with constant deep rooted weeds so without a doubt the fabric has made a huge difference giving it a tidy look , hence I was worried that this could be the start of them returning but hopefully as mentioned it’s just been some spores that have caused this.
