Another Weed Problem...........

These keep grwing everywhere, even coming throught the tarmac of the drive, they are colloqually known as 'Horses Tails' but I've no idea of their real name or how to get rid of them permanently, I use a weedkiller, they die (or seem to) a few weeks later, they are coming back and again like my other post they spread very quickly. I have had them drowing up to waist level (about 3ft tall) if we have been on holiday for a couple of weeks.
Any help on killing these (without the use of creosote -lol) would be helpfull.
(You can see my Rhubarb and Blackcurrants in some photos - lol, we had 3 Kg of blackcurrants this year, great Jam, usually have 3 crops of  Rhubarb too)
Thanks

Horsetail, again very difficult to eradicate, just keep removing as much as you can, which weakens it.
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

  • Thanks, looks like constant weeding for me, was hoping for an easier way out but at least I know now.

I had some of this in my old drive. the only way I could control it was to keep pulling it. took years before it really made any impact on it.  :/
  • Thanks all, looks like pulling weeds is the order of the day then. :'(
  • The Equisetum(horse tail) has a fairly robust underground stem so if you want to set it back a bit more when pulling it out I found it helps to track back this underground stem and take as much out as possible at the same time as removing the green parts. I found a trowel good for loosening out the soil around the underground stem and allowed me get more out each time I went at it and this helped it get weaker over time. Also it likes poor drainage so improving this may make it less vigorous as well. When I was tackling it in my parent's back garden I got the levels of it down very low with just being persistent in taking out a shoot whenever they came up but now I have moved away from there it has made a bit of a comeback but not to the extent that it is out competing their garden plants.
    Happy gardening!
