Potted Apple Tree

I have a Discovery apple growing in a large pot in the garden. Unfortunately the apples on the tree are all really small this year and it seems as though the pot is now rootbound. I wonder if it's possible to take the tree out of the pot and trim the roots and then re-pot into fresh compost? The pot the tree is in is heavy duty plastic and measures approx 65 cm across the diameter.
