It could be the hit and miss weather, but it's almost impossible to be accurate without seeing them in the flesh. I think they've suffered from cold weather and possibly too much exposure. It can be a shock to protected plants if they're put out into completely different conditions from those that they've been grown in.
I've never grown the Floridas because I really don't like them, but they do need more attention generally. You may have to just cut them back a bit, and let them develop more shoots from below ground.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • If it’s any consolation I’ve had three taiga die on me, luckily I took cuttings…

…one appeared to be doing very well, was in a great spot and then just died for no apparent reason..….

by contrast I also took a Montana cutting (cheap supermarket variety) left that in a 9cm pot as couldn’t think where to put It. It’s about 1.5m tall and 1 m wide, I’ve neglected it forgot to water it it’s still in a tiny pot and appears to be thriving.

Me too, I am going to give up with taiga I think I have a few Florida’s that are doing well but this one I can’t get off the starting block,

It won't for long - montanas need to be in the ground. They really won't grow in a container for any length of time. A very different clematis from a Florida.  :)

I know, it was a spare cutting…I’ve no where to put it…I think if it died I wouldn’t feel bad about throwing it away (which I really should do!) :)

I can’t believe it doing so well at the moment

Have you got a neighbour or a relation that could make use of it? I know what you mean  -you don't want to throw away something viable  ;)
