I have not tried it but did wonder about smearing gasket sealing compound around the gasket, or alternatively, smearing silicone grease (not the self setting bathroom stuff).

Would smearing with oil be OK for a test?

Worth a try and may give an indication of a leak, if any get sucked-in (might be tricky to see that happening though.)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • 2023: It's an air flow issue. Take off the air filter housing lid and remove the air filter. Start it up from cold and when it is dry (as in not soaking with fuel). These are usually Chondas' which are Chinese component built Japanese Honda. Build quality is just about OK as long as you do loads of maintenance and have a good understanding of all their little foibles and ways.

Wish I actually knew what I did to get it working but what with one thing and another in dismantling and reassembly, for whatever reason, it started on the second pull and has  done so this year as well.

Guess it is temperamental  but given the micro size of the numerous holes in the carb, hardly surprising.
