Does anybody know what this is under my gravel/membrane

Morning,

I moved some gravel in the back garden this morning and pulled back the membrane to see where the concrete starts and soil begins (there apparently is an area of concrete somewhere under the gravel where a greenhouse once sat) and found this....

Not sure what it is or where it's coming from.  Is it roots?  Is it fungus?

There are no plants in the garden apart from the leylandii hedge around the perimeter.

There is an old trunk in this area.......

Any help would be appreciated.

    Definitely roots. Could be old ones from the old trunk, or live ones from the hedge. If you are planning to plant in this area, just cut them off. I get loads of roots from my hornbeam hedge, but I have cut planting spaces in them and things grow fine.

    I agree ... tree roots of some sort.  I'd not worry about cutting them off.  They're surface 'feeder' roots rather than big roots that anchor the tree, so shouldn't affect the stability of the tree/hedge ... wherever it is.  

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
