Very spiky plant - what is it please?

Can anyone identify this plant which has popped up unannounced?  No flowers as yet but fairly vigorous growth on long stems wirh nasty spikes! Thank you hopefully!

Might it be a berberis? Planted by a bird?

If you don't like it I'd dig it up while it's small.

  • Thanks I'm not sure? It is spiky. Anyone else agree with Berberis?

Yes, we've got a hedge of it and it's absolutely vicious, I hate it.

I took mine out as it's a horror to prune. It does keep popping up...  Dark red stems

    The birds love it though

Yes - I love it. Great colour on the red ones in particular, and  excellent for wildlife- flowers for bees etc, and berries for the birds.
The thorns don't bother me  :D
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
