Can tomato fruits be ripened without before being fully grown?

I’ve taken some tomatoes inside after the stem snapped and left them with a banana in some newspaper, I opened them after two days and they have become a very pale green and softened significantly. I wasn’t expecting much as only one or two were even a decent size yet they have seemed to ripen slightly.
