Cherry Tree

Hi, can anybody help, i brought an Espalier cherry tree last year, it did not have any blossom on it this year but i notice that there are a lot of long branches coming off of it. Should i cut them back, or leave them until the Autumn. When is the best time? Please advise Thanks

  • I have read the best time to prune Cherry is in summer to avoid conditions suited to the spread of a disease they can catch called silver leaf.

All trained forms of trees need a bit of work to keep and develop the intended shape. There are lots of guides online from sources like the RHS as well as useful books like the Harry Baker book on fruit.
There is some doubt that cherries are suitable for the espalier treatment and the most common trained shape is a fan.

I've been reading about this for my apple tree which gets both a summer and winter prune. I think cherries and plums fit into the category of trees that only get a summer prune (though happy to be corrected if expertise suggests otherwise).
