Weedkiller before sowing lawnseed ??

Have final part of lawn at house ready with topsoil got in and levelled out etc. Wasn't planning on sowing it until September as was told weather and soil temps too warm at the moment to sow lawnseed. If leave it for a month until sowing I will have weeds growing in meantime and wondering should I put out weedkiller on it to stave off any growth on it for next month.

Nope. Any weedkiller that prevents weeds germinating will also prevent your grass germinating. You can apply glyphosate immediately prior to sowing if you want - but you may as well just hoe off small weeds and seedlings as part of your preparation.

  • My advice would be never to use chemicals. You can try and keep the light out with a covering or just keep hoeing now & then. You wont really get that much weed in a month - well, not so much that it'll become a real issue.

Just go over it with the hoe every now and again, often enough that the weeds don't reach flowering stage and set more seed. It's a job for fine dry days so the weedlings will dry up on the surface and not regrow. Then when the weather plays nicely you can do a final firming, leveling and raking before you sow the grass seed.
