It's probably better to wait, if only because it's easier in autumn/winter conditions, but it depends on your conditions. Ground is damper, so digging out is less back breaking! It's also better for establishing the shrub - the weather means less watering.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I have landscapers coming who can do it the week after next who can handle a bit of tough digging. I'll have to get someone to come back and do it if I wait, which is ok but not quite as convenient. I have a dodgy neck so can't do it myself. Thanks very much fairygirl!
Just make sure you water it really thoroughly beforehand, and they get all the rootball and a bit more. That means less stress for it. If you can prep the new site really well too, that lowers the stress as well

Hi Fairygirl, I see you're up early and helping the community So Maggy the magnolia has moved!
I hope they weren't too rough. She's now on the north east wall, shaded by a house and garage most of the day with her other ericasious friends. Let's see what happens in spring!

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Keep an eye on it for the next few months too.
