Under tree planting inspiration

I have a small teardrop flowerbed (approx 2m in diameter) in the middle there is a very old holly tree. I really would like some ideas for a planting scheme. My previous attempts have not had the desired effect. It gets a fair bit of sun during the day but does get very dry. Any ideas please??

It'll be very rooty under the surface from the tree, so possibly quite a challenge to get anything new established. You could try classic low-growing toughies like mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus), the dwarf spreading types of campanula (C. portenschlagiana or C. poscharskyana), ladies' mantle (Alchemilla mollis). I have dry sandy soil and all of those grow well here and spread around once established.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

What about some low growing sedums?  These are some of my favourites.

    Sedum sexangulare
    Sedum Dragons Blood
    Sedum oreganum
    Sedum pluricaule
    Sedum pachyclados
    Sedum coral carpet
    Sedum lemon ball
