Pretty poor looking Roses - what to do?

Can any advise on what to do with these roses? The look so un-healthy!

Weed the garden … get rid of all those sow thistles etc. They’re competing with the rose for moisture and nutrients.

The rose is planted so close to the fence that it’ll be in very dry soil anyway so it needs a lot of water … and improve the soil by mulching with organic matter … well rotted manure would be a good start. Then at least the rose has a chance.

There are others more expert than I am who can give you more detailed help … but that’s what I’d do to start with.

I agree.  Take out the weeds, give the roses a good, deep drink and and prune out the obvious dead or damaged stems.

Then improve the soil with a mulch of well-rotted manure (can be bought in bags from good GCs and DIYs).  Keep the roses watered during hot, dry spells.

They should then produce healthy new leaves and maybe even some flowers later on but good leaves would be a start as they will help feed the plants and the root systems for a bettr show next year.

  • I’m by no means an expert but I have two rose bushes in my front garden and they get attacked by aphids a lot! I tried spraying them with water and part fairy liquid and that kept them at bay. Some of the leaves look similar to what happened to mine too.

Mine are really old so in the end I cut them right back to let them re-grow again over the years.

I would probably listen to the experts too but this did help me initially :)
