Lawn & bamboo

Hi, really need some gardening advice for a novice gardener. I moved into our new home  6 months ago. In the garden we have inherited a bamboo plant. Since moving in we added lawn to the garden which was originally gravel. This week has been very hot, and have notice a patch of where the lawns died away right next to the bamboo. Is this a coincidence or is the bamboo killing the lawn? Any help and advice would be appreciated.

hi and welcome to the forum.
It's not killing the lawn, just competing for water. Lawns are pretty resilient, it'll bounce back

If the lawn is new keep it well watered till it’s settled and growing well

You need to keep an eye out though for any bamboo shoots coming up.....anywhere.
Just keep cutting them back where you don't want them and this will weaken the new growths.

Hi @archy281289G0-KAOey - the only thing I'd add to the advice given is that, did you leave a good circle clear round the bamboo when you laid the turf or seeded?
If not, it will always struggle for the reasons given, so it's worth clearing that bit of grass to make it easier. If you've  kept any of the gravel, you can put a thick layer of it on that cleared area, which will help keep weeds down and help retain moisture, and will set off your bamboo nicely     :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • We have a laid sleeper between the bamboo and the lawn. It doesn't seem to be growing in places unwanted other than up. I've cut it back and will keep lawn well watered. Think will dig up roots the weekend.
