Very overgrown garden

I recently moved house which has a very large garden that’s not been worked for 25 years. It is full of brambles, nettles, and ivy.  I’m working my way through the garden digging and clearing the beds. Do I now cover with black plastic, or is it better to let the weeds etc regrow and spray with weed killer. Thanks in advance.

I think most folk on the forum are not in favour of weedkillers. I have some pictures somewhere of a garden we moved into, didn't actually go down it for 6 weeks because we couldn't. We cleared by hand. Found most of a car,an air raid shelter, all buried.

Cover it, if as you say it's a large space weedkiller will cost you a fortune .  Better for the environment too.

I agree. Weedkiller is pretty pricey these days. Keep it for weeds that you can't gwet at any other way, like when the roots are inaccessible.

I'd spray. Concentrated glyphosate would not work out expensive, I would wack down the top growth and pull up as much as possible, then spray the regrowth after about 4 weeks. Glyphosate works best on vegetation that's actively growing, and applied in the morning on a fine, preferably still, day. Still would probably need a repeat application.

  • Thank you all. I’m going to give glyphosate a go, just this once.  I’ve removed most of the brambles etc, it was very hard work , and I still have a way to go. So I propose to dig out all, then spray with glyphosate any re-growth. I would like to put in some spring bulbs in October. Wish me luck.😂
