Being inside is the problem. They're totally hardy and need to be outdoors, and have plenty of water. Always harder in a pot - they need a good soil based medium to grow in, and more care than when in the ground.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

But it still isn't outside as such. It has no natural access to water and is totally reliant on you for all it's needs
I very much doubt it's been fine for over 2 years. It can seem like it's died suddenly, but conifers generally decline over a long period until they just can't stay alive any longer, unless some other factors are present to see them off. Lack of water is the most likely reason. Once potted shrubs or trees dry out, they're very difficult to rehydrate

it may have looked fine, but conifers rarely die quickly … it’s usually a drawn out process over a period and hardly noticeable for a long time … there comes a time when they reach the point of no return … that is when the leaves turn brown … 😞
