Holes appearing under lawn

Does anyone know what this could be, you walk over the lawn and feel that the soil has fallen away under the grass.my husband pulled back the turf and there was a 20 or 30 cm deep hole,made up of lovely crumbly good quality top soil(most places you dig in our garden is very gravelly).What is going on?Very confused…..

    How wide was the hole? Can you take a pic and share?

    It could be moles, but you'd see the evidence on the surface.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
