Is this a greengage?

My friend showed me this tree in their garden today, and didn't know what it was. My best guess was a greengage - or is it a plum? And how will they know when the fruit is ripe?

Looks like greengage, lucky them! They are a type of plum so check for ripeness like you would with plums by assessing how soft they are getting. They won't change colour much, maybe getting slightly yellow depending on variety. They will also detach easily from the branch when ready.

It might just be the shadow but in the last photo it looks like one of the inside plums is starting to turn purple.

Not sure if it is a greengage. Looks more like a plum.
