    Unfortunately, watering is one of those things that's impossible to be accurate about when recommending the amount to use. Too many variables.  :)
    You'll get a better feel of it the more you garden , and the more familiar you become with the plants, and your plot and climate. The last one is a major factor. Shrubs and trees will always need more than most perennials would, because they don't grow as quickly, and have a totally different structure and habit, but anything newly planted, especially in summer and  regardless of type,  needs more until established. Once established, shrubs and trees would need less attention than perennials in drier conditions, because they can access moisture more easily.
    That may sound complicated, but it's worth reading as much as you can to get a feel for the reasons for watering, and why certain plants need a different approach with their care.  :)
    It's understandable that you want everything to thrive and survive, but gardening is often a mix of experience and experimentation. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
