Resting the soil?

I have a very VERY small veg plot and have worked it quite hard for several years. My crops this year have been disappointing, due to weather & soil quality. Should I let it rest for a season, planting only green manure? If so, which green manures would other members recommend. I'm in the West Midlands with a south-facing plot with a wall behind it. Ta ever so, grateful for any help.

Hello Molly, Do you dig in plenty of well rotted manure every year? If not, I suggest you do this as soon as you finish harvesting this year, wait at least  couple of weeks, then sow your green manure . Sorry, I cannot remember what we last used but I'm sure the others will suggest names.

I think I'd satisfy myself with the first part of Lizzie's.  Enough farmyard manure plus anything else (immediately) compostable like kitchen waste, lawn mowings etc will make the irksome task of green manure, to me, unnecessary.
