Potatoes - storage

If I heard properly, during the latest Gardeners' World programme, Monty Don mentioned that if earlies were stored propely, they could be kept for a couple of months. What is the method to be used please?

Basically, they need to be kept somewhere cool and dark.  Unless I'm using the ground for something else, I usually leave mine in the ground until needed, which provides both requirements but is not so good if you have any tuber pest issues, such as keeled slugs or wireworm.

Cool and dark ... but not too cold ... definitely not the fridge ... somewhere between 5 and 10 C.
