Best way to deal with small flies on capsicum plant

Hi there
My red pepper plant is doing ok and has 3 small peppers growing on it just now and quite a few flowers. However, it has loads of little flies scurrying around on the surface of the compost. The plant is indoors on a windowsill. I presume these flies are hatching from eggs and grubs in the compost. Is it worth getting rid of all the compost and repotting it or am I likely to still have the problem. Is there any way to get rid of the pesky little blighters? Are they likely to do long term damage to the plant or should I tolerate them?
TIA for any advice

They are probably fungus gnats that are attracted to damp compost.
So the compost is probably too moist. You could water a bit less so the top of the compost dries a little.
Also you could put a layer of grit on top of the compost which will stop them.
They are unlikely to cause any significant damage - more of an annoyance

I had a similar problem with a basil plant on my window sill. I bought a bag of pumice in Ikea, which I use as a mulch on houseplants. This solved my issues with the little buggers.
